Early pregnancy symptoms
If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it might be an early sign of pregnancy and a good idea to take a pregnancy test.
• Late period
• Extreme tiredness
• Need to wee more often
• A metallic taste in your mouth
• Sensitivity to smells
• Tender or sore breasts.
How do pregnancy tests work?
Pregnancy tests work by detecting one of the key early signs of pregnancy: a hormone called human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). This hormone is only made when a woman is pregnant.
Traces of hCG can be found in the urine from three to four days after implantation, but the concentration needs to continue to build up to a level at which the test can detect it and give a positive result. The best time to take a pregnancy test is from the day that the period is missed.
Where can I get a pregnancy test?
GP pregnancy test
These tests are either free or a small fee is charged.
You’ll need to take a sample of your urine in a clean container (you can get sample pots from your GP’s surgery). The best time to collect a urine sample is first thing in the morning. This is because levels of hCG will have built up overnight.
If the urine sample is tested on the spot, you probably will be given the result after just a few minutes. You may have to wait up to a few days for the pregnancy test results though.
Home pregnancy test
These tests are available to buy from chemists or supermarkets and enable you to find out if you are pregnant in private after a few minutes.
The tests are considered to be quite accurate, although it is essential that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
Choose a kit that you think will be easy for you to use and make sure that you understand what mark or symbol will appear if the test is positive.
Find out more about taking a pregnancy test.
How accurate is the pregnancy test?
It is important to know that whilst a positive result is likely to be accurate, a negative result may be misleading. Some women have a negative result and test again a week later to find that it is positive.
This is due to the levels of pregnancy hormone gradually building up to a level at which they can be detected. If you test yourself very early on and you have a negative result, you should carry out another test in 2-3 days’ time if you have still not had a period.
If you continue to get negative results and still no period, you should consult your doctor.
What should I do if I am pregnant?
Once you get a positive pregnancy test, make an appointment to see your doctor or a midwife.
Tell the doctor’s surgery when you are making the appointment that you have had a positive pregnancy test result as you might need a longer appointment.

Keep weeing a lot plus number two a lot.!
For the past five days.!
I’m worried it may hurt the baby even tho I’m only 6 weeks .!
What can I do.? I have a scan booked in 2moro but the heat and cramps are unbearable...
By Midwife @Tommys on 15 Aug 2018 - 14:47
You need to go to your GP for an urgent review ASAP!
If they cannot see you as an urgent appointment, then you should go to a&e minors. You could have an infection if you are sweating that much and feeling that unwell for so long with an upset stomach. The abdominal pain is also a concern which needs to be addressed urgently. So please be seen as soon as possible. Take good care of yourself

I had unprotected sex on 5/17
I took a pregnancy test 1 week later and it came up negative
I started my period the day after and bled for 6 days
I had a second period on time on 6/24 and again bled for 6 days
Its now been 43 days since the last day of my previous period. I've been having abdominal pains but its not like cramps and I haven't had any other symptoms. But is it possible I could still be pregnant even after having my period twice?
By Midwife @Tommys on 15 Aug 2018 - 14:43
Hi Lizzy J
It sounds very unlikely that you are pregnant as you have had x2 periods and a negative pregnancy test.
You should go to your GP who can do a blood/urine pregnancy test again to be 100% sure if you feel that this is a sudden change for you. If you are not pregnant, then you may need further gynae investigations which your GP can refer you for.

After sex i felt weakness in my legs and i got acidity which i usually also expierence and there ws gas discharge also and stools were also not passing easliy .. and i felt cramps in my stomach and there was bit heat burn in chest area because of acidity . Can u please tell that am i pregnant??? I had home urine test twice and it came out to be negative. My periods are due in the last month of august. Please tell if am pregnant?? Or not .. there is not to worry about
By Midwife @Tommys on 14 Aug 2018 - 12:20
Hi, please take a further pregnancy test when your period is due. It may be that you have tested too early and the other symptoms aren't related to pregnancy.
Even if your partner did not ejaculate inside you this is not a reliable form of contraception so if you don't want to get pregnant at the moment you need to consider other forms of contraception so you don't need to worry. If you need further advice get back in contact.

Im experiencing abdominal cramps for about 7 days, im not sure if its implantation cramps or just PMS. I dont know what to do because I've read online that implantation cramps happen for about 1 to 3 days and when it exceeded it might be just pms but i haven't had my monthly menstruation for july and im stressed out because it's already August when i expected to have my period on july 21. Is it possible that i am pregnant or just missed my monthly period?

The only way to know is to take a pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant.

My last cylce was may 30 I spotted the first weekend in June it's now July 24 and still no cylce took test all negative but one with a faint line could I be pregnant
By Midwife @Tommys on 27 Jul 2018 - 12:05
We do advise that any line on a pregnancy test is taken as a positive and that you are pregnant, it may be that the other tests were just a little early and your hormone level was not yet high enough for the pregnancy test to detect it. If you are still unsure then you can see your GP for a blood test to confirm a pregnancy. In the meantime, we do advise for you to be taking folic acid if you think that you are pregnant.

will I get pregnant,I saw menses on the 29 of june finished it on july 3rd.
then I had sex on Wednesday and Thursday ,without anything will I get pregnant am I safe or unsafe.
By Midwife @Tommys on 9 Jul 2018 - 11:42
Hi Jennifer, In most situations this is too early in your cycle to get pregnant. However, to be completely sure that you do not get pregnant we recommend that you use contraception at all times of the month.

i had unprotected sex over a month ago and with three days left of the month, i have not gotten my period yet. i took a pregnancy test about a week after sex and it came back negative. the one weird thing about this is that there was no semen even close to being inside of me... what do i do?
By Midwife @Tommys on 29 Jun 2018 - 10:14
There is a chance that you could be pregnant if you have had unprotected sex and are late on your period even if your partner ejaculated outside of your vagina. The pregnancy test that you took could have been a little early so I would suggest that you repeat the test and if this is negative and your period still have not come then to discuss this with your GP if this is unusual for you.

My last period was 25th may, I had unprotected sex on 1st June after was feeling very very tired, took a pregnancy test, was negative. 13th June had unprotected sex, 17th June my period should’ve came but was 4 days late but on 5th day started bleeding up to 5 days..could I still be pregnant?
By Midwife @Tommys on 25 Jun 2018 - 16:41
No, from your description it seems that you had a normal period so it is unlikely that you are pregnant.

Am I pregnant? My period usually lasts 4 to 6 days with severe cramps and heavy bleeding (5 to 7 pads a day).
5/7 light cramps/bloated/sore breasts.
5/19 spotting (1 pantyliner a day/3days)
5/21 negative hcg.
5/28 negative hcg.
6/15 spotting (1 pantyliner a day/2days)
I'm 36yo, I'm not in any medication. Always had a flat tummy (52kls/114lbs - 5'4/164cm). I'm not stressed, I don't exercise nor on diet. It's now the 21st of June (9 weeks from my last period. Since the 7th of may, I've been getting on/off light cramps mainly on my left pelvis, sore breasts mainly nipple but not feeling full. Now I'm showing a bump on my lower belly.
I read that some women gets a negative blood test and ultrasound and doesn't get a positive till after 12 or sometimes 20 weeks.
Am I pregnant? Pls help.
By Midwife @Tommys on 22 Jun 2018 - 13:49
It is possible that you are pregnant, I note that you took a pregnancy test a month after intercourse but not since, I would suggest to now repeat the test as it has been a while since you have done one and you are having symptoms. If the test is negative then do see your GP for a review.

Hi my name is Valerie I have 3 kids already but me and my fiance is trying to have another baby we had unprotected sex 7 days straight from June 7 to June 14 I have a 27-30 day cycle but I have been feeling very nauseous ,very tired,my nose is very sensitive to smells I used to love chicken and now it makes me sick when I smell it I been peeing alot and I have really bad mood swings I took a dollar test on June 19th and it was negative can I still be pregnant?
By Midwife @Tommys on 22 Jun 2018 - 13:43
It is possible that you are pregnant, it may just be a little bit too soon for your hormone level to be high enough for a pregnancy test to detect it. If your next period does not come then I would advise for you to repeat a pregnancy test.

By Midwife @Tommys on 29 May 2018 - 10:48
Having unprotected sex does mean that you could get pregnant. If you are not planning to have a baby, then please use contraception to protect yourself from an unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
It would be sensible to do a pregnancy test if your period is late when it is due next.
If you need to talk about this in more detail over the phone, please call our pregnacyline on 0800 0147800

the secound month i did urine test and also blood test but it was negative..am confuse if i might be pregnant..my brest is bigger in size and it has somethings lyk pimples on my nipple..i ask my nurse why and she told mhe bcus i was a virgin before i had sex maybe my body is responding through changes
plz does that mean am pregnant?
By Midwife @Tommys on 29 May 2018 - 11:02
If your period is late, then you need to do another urine pregnancy test to be 100% sure. If you took the blood/urine pregnancy test quickly after the sex when the condom broke, then this may have been too early to detect the result accurately.
Breast size can change as you are still growing at 18 yrs old, but this can also be linked to menstrual hormones as well as pregnancy. So you will need to do another test to be sure.
You can go back to your GP/Nurse to discuss your symptoms when you know for sure if you are pregnant or not.

A woman is fertile for only a few days in each menstrual cycle. It is known that having regular sex every two or three days throughout the month will give you the best chance, you don’t need to time sex around ovulation. A woman is most likely to get pregnant if she has sex within a day or so of ovulation. Ovulation usually happens about 14 days after the first day of your last period. An egg lives for about 12-24 hours after it’s released. In order for a woman to get pregnant, a sperm must fertilise the egg within this time. Sperm can live for up to five days inside a woman's body, which means an egg is often fertilised by sperm that entered the body before the egg was released.
It is too early to be doing a pregnancy test now. It takes 6-7 days after an egg is fertilised before your body starts to produce the pregnancy hormone hCG that a pregnancy test will detect. Some tests can be used 4-6 days before your period is due so test then and if you get a negative result you can test again on the day your period is due.
80-90% of women will get pregnant within a year of trying Liora.
I hope this helps

Me and my partner have been trying for a baby for over a year. We don't use protection and I know my body very well. My periods are 26 - 28 day cycle. I know the day I will ovulate and have my period. This month I timed it all well and had intercourse 6 days before ovulation until on the day of ovulation. I don't have much symptoms apart from having a funny taste in my mouth and highly sensitive to smells. I do hope I am pregnant but I do doubt it because we've been trying for age. Can I get some advice please x

Hi - Thank you for your message.
It sounds like you are doing all of the right things in trying for a baby - if you haven't already, its also a important to ensure you are taking a Folic Acid supplement daily. You can find more information on our 'Getting Ready to [email protected] pages here:
In regards to your query, the general advice is that if you notice one or more of these symptoms, it might be an early sign of pregnancy and a good idea to take a pregnancy test.
• Late period
• Extreme tiredness
• Need to wee more often
• A metallic taste in your mouth
• Sensitivity to smells
• Tender or sore breasts.

I am 19 years of age and my boyfriend is 28 years of age. We are ready for a baby like 50/50 but not just yet .

Thank you for your comment. It's too early to know if you are pregnant or not. I would advise waiting for your next period before doing a pregnancy test; however there are some tests that can be done as early as 8 days after conception. If you are pregnant and want to continue with the pregnancy then you will need to see your GP or contact your local maternity unit for a referral for antenatal care.

Im 18 years old and i’m just a little confused. Excuse my language in advance. But I missed my period, december 2017, but i didn’t think nothing of it because i thought maybe it can be a cycle change(because i do have irregular periods). So when January came i began to bleed and i caught my period for 4 days like it usually should be. However i still took a pregnancy test(it came out negative) and i went to the doctor to see why i missed my period in december. The doctors test also came back negative for the pregnancy test. All she told me was to eat healthier and exercise daily. However when February came i didn’t really get my period, however i was spotting blood throughout the whole month. So I’m a little confused. Here it is March and Im just waiting to see what happens this time before i go to the hospital. I need answers
By Midwife @Tommys on 9 Mar 2018 - 11:21
Hi Tiffany, It is not unusual for your periods to be irregular particularly if you are a teenager. If you have a negative pregnancy test this month there is no reason to think there is a problem. The doctor's advice to eat well and to exercise is the best thing to do. Try to maintain a healthy weight and normal BMI (Body mass index) and this will give you the best chance of a healthy pregnancy when you are ready to conceive.

Hi im April and im just 17 years old. And i have maybe an irregular period because i have been experience this 01-03-18 a early mens so im really over thinking why its so early? My real due date every month is 26th day. Then its just a 3 days, but i was shock when im bleeding again this 01-16-18 i just remember that im almost bleeding 1week or more. And before i forgot i am active in sex, (Sorry for the words but i need help so im just saying honest) and almost everyday making love with my partner even i have period. Then this 02-04-18 my period was coming early again and im bleeding for just 4days. After that im suppose to waiting my period on my due date 02-26-18. Then after my early period i have experience a lot of symptoms, i was thinking and getting crazy because of that. Almost all the symptoms of pregnancy at the first trimester(nausea and breast pain not include to my symptoms). And i decide to take a pregnancy test 02-25-18 the first result is possitive but really fainted line, second is negative, i take two PT that time and i use that two pregnancy test 8pm. So i decide to wait until the next month. Before i take a test again the symptoms is getting more wild when a few days before my next period. So now 03-04-18 i was feel so sad and really dissapointed because i start bleeding 2am and its just a mild color(light red) but after a few hours its getting heavy and some black spot of blood or looks like a mucus covering with blood, but i think if im not changing pad until this 5am, maybe my pad is still not full. I just feel painful today and its my first time since when i was young. But i still feel the symptoms like bloating, crampings, pain to my lower right side that i feel like have needle inside, back pains and frequent urination, high temperature, some darkening to my skin, and tiredness, mood swings etc. So this night im really confuse i dont know what will i do, i dont what i want to expect, and did i need to get more pregnancy test after my this bleeding?
Or what? Please give me answers, i dont really know what to do now! How can i explain this to my friends, to my boyfriend. To who know that im pregnant.
By Midwife @Tommys on 6 Mar 2018 - 12:13
It sounds like you are having a really confusing time and I'm really sorry as you sound like you are unwell with the pain, frequent urination and high temperature.
I am not sure whether you have repeated another pregnancy test this month but the other symptoms are not normal and you do need to be seen as you might have an infection that needs treatment. You also need to let your doctor know that you think you might be pregnant. If you are April you need to know how pregnant you are so that you have choices about what happens next. Please let us know how you're doing and email again [email protected]

I started my last period 16th December which lasted for 2 weeks which I have never experienced before. I then had unprotected sex on the 30th 31st Dec and 1st Jan when the bleeding was very light. Then a week later around the 7th Jan I had spotting for 3 days, also never experienced this before. Iv still nit had a period is there a chance I could be pregnant? I am still breastfeeding my 10 month old.
By Midwife @Tommys on 5 Feb 2018 - 16:51
Hello, Firstly, How lovely that you are still feeding your little one. Yes there is a chance that you could be pregnant and I suggest that you do a test to find out. Breast feeding is not a reliable form of contraception! If not then don't worry too much. It can take time for your cycle to return to normal. If you still don't have a normal period when you stop feeding, let your GP know. Best wishes

Hi, I'm 26 and have recently been diagnosed with PCOS in one ovary. I have regular periods, every 25-30 day. I took Depo-Provera injection(i think it's this one), in January 2016,however, I recall doctor saying it wil last 6 months rather than 3 months which I have read up online (i may be mistaken). After this first injection, I didn't go back for a second injection that year. Through the rest of the year I was bleeding nearly every week up until October (approx) where I started to get regular monthly periods. Ever since than I have been been having unprotected sex with my partner in the hope to get pregnant and it's not happening. It's been minimum of 12-14 months of trying. I have gained weight over the past year, but I'm not over weight. BMI is ok. I've recently joined the gym though for general fitness. Please advise

I’ve been trying for a baby since April’17. I had been using ovulation kits but none showed I was ovulating. I have 1 child that is 4.
I have sore breast, lower back pain and dizzy. According to my app my period is due tomorrow. My periods are never the same length.
Do you think I could be pregnant or just usual period symptoms? I usually get sore breasts when my period is due. Should I test tomorrow or wait until this weekend?
By Midwife @Tommys on 19 Jan 2018 - 12:55
It is difficult to know whether or not you are pregnant however if you have noted these symptoms and if you period does not come when due then, allowing for a few days, it would be worth taking a pregnancy test. If this is negative and you period still does not come after a week or so then repeat the test. If you continue to try for a pregnancy and this does not happen, then after a year of trying we would advise to see your GP for a review. I hope this helps, please of be in touch if we can help further ([email protected]). Best wishes x

It is quite true that funding for fertility treatment is limited on the NHS and the main reason for this is that success rates decline rapidly as we get older. Many clinics have a cut-off at the age of 40-42. For those who can afford it, treatment in the private sector is an option and there are details on the 'Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority' website. Hope this helps

Hi Tommys Midwife,
I came off the pill on the 25th october, had my usual period after, but ive had nothing since then, so im 2 months late, ive had an increased appetite, put weight on, boobs are sore, certain smells are a little more stronger then usual, would it be worth taking a test or is it all some side effects of coming off the pill?
By Midwife @Tommys on 5 Jan 2018 - 13:50
These symptoms can be due to a number of causes but if you have had intercourse then there is a chance that you are pregnant, but only a pregnancy test will provide you with the answer. If you take a test and it is positive then we would advise you to take folic acid and see your GP to be referred to a midwife. If the test is negative then it could be due to the change in hormone levels due to stopping the pill. If the symptoms continue and your period does not come then do see your GP to be reviewed.

it is difficult to say for sure if you could be pregnant. You have not mentioned if you have missed your period, or if you have done 1 or more pregnancy tests.
If you have not, then it might be worthwhile doing a pregnancy test. If this is negative, you may wish to go to visit your GP and see if they feel that you need a review by a Gynae specialist. Please do take good care of yourself. Tommy's Midwife

So basically I have been diagnosed with P.C.O.S (Poly cystic ovarian syndrome). I've had my implant out since February and never used any protection with my partner since, however I also don't have periods anymore so I was wondering if it is possible I could be pregnant as I've been bloated past few days, and been nausea throughout the past few days, and been going to the loo alot more. I'm just unsure of my own situation as the condition that I have hasn't really been explained to me very well so all I know is what I've read up on the internet and I don't want to believe everything that is written on the internet.
By Midwife @Tommys on 15 Dec 2017 - 09:28
It is unlikely that you are pregnant given that you have not had any periods since stopping your contraception, however it is not impossible and there is still a chance. The only way to know is to take a pregnancy test, even if this comes back negative, if your symptoms continue you may want to repeat it in a week in case it is early as you do not have any periods dates to go by. If you would like to talk further about PCOS and conception or anything else then do email us to [email protected] and we can support you in more detail. x

Hi I had unprotected sex back at the end of July. But my partner didn’t ejaculate inside me. I’m 46 . Early August I felt so tired and run down I did a pregnancy test but it was negative. However I had no usual symptoms like sore breasts etc. I did suffer from vertigo for about 2 months but the doctor said could be caused by an ear infection. I am having my usual periods with period pains. But my belly seems to have recently really grown and feels heavy. I have done 2 pregnancy tests this week but both neg. I’m really worried, as I’m no longer with my partner and don’t want any more children. Is it possible to have what seem to be periods and test negative but be pregnant? I have felt often do tired but have a very busy schedule so put it down to that and winter . Advice please?
