“Hi guys, Tana and I want to thank you so much for your support over the past couple of weeks. We had a devastating weekend as Tana has sadly miscarried our son at five months. We're together healing as a family, but we want to thank everyone again for all your amazing support and well wishes. I’d especially like to send a big thank you to the amazing team at Portland Hospital for everything they’ve done. Gx”

The physical and emotional impact of late miscarriage is heart-breaking for couples and families. Our thoughts are with the Ramsay family at what we know must be a very difficult time. Tommy’s midwife Sophie has some words on coping with this loss:

"A late miscarriage, a pregnancy loss of between 13-24 weeks gestation, is a physically and mentally traumatic experience for any woman. A pregnancy loss at any stage is devastating for parents and finding out 'why' a miscarriage has happened, or the possible causes of it, becomes an important part of the grieving process.

"Unfortunately in many cases, the cause of late miscarriage will remain unknown, whilst others can be attributed to underlying medical problems.

"Experiencing a pregnancy loss can leave women feeling more sadness than they ever thought possible. The emotional impact of such a loss usually takes longer to heal than the physical impact and it is often recommended that bereavement support and counselling services (GP referral) be accessed to help families to comprehend their loss. Women (and their partners/family/friends) will all grieve differently, but allowing themselves time to do this is really important.

"Here at Tommy’s we often receive phone calls and emails from women (or their partners) who have suffered a loss and are in the process of coming to terms with what has happened. We are not counsellors, but sometimes a friendly ear is all that is needed to help talk things through.

We have just opened the Tommy's National Miscarriage Research Centre, which is already helping women and their families, investigating the causes of miscarriage and supporting women to have healthy pregnancies after their loss or losses."
