The Let's get baby friendly Awards 2010 Winners!

On Friday 19 March 2010 we announced the winners of our annual Let’s Get Baby Friendly Awards, at the London Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Now in their 15th year, Tommy's Let's get baby friendly Awards are designed to recognise the vital support that friends, family and health professionals offer couples who are experiencing difficulties with their pregnancy.
The ceremony was hosted by Carrie and David Grant, and awards were presented by celebrity mums including Jo Whiley, Terri Dwyer, Nancy Sorrell, Amanda Lamb, Sunetra Sarker, Zoe Tyler and Janey Lee Grace.

Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley presented Phillipa Banks – a midwife from Cheshire - with the Tommy’s and Cow & Gate Hero Award.

Amy Docherty, also from Cheshire, nominated Phillipa for the award (which celebrates a health professional who has gone beyond the call of duty in helping someone through their pregnancy or a pregnancy-related problem) following the support she received from Phillipa when Amy lost her son, Billy, a few minutes after he was born. Amy, 23, gave birth to Billy - her first and only son - on 30 October 2009 - 11 weeks before her due date.

Paul Gough, a father from Greenwich, was the winner of the Tommy’s and Bounty Angel Award, which was presented by TV personality Zoe Tyler.

The award celebrates someone who was a huge support to a loved one going through a difficult parenting or pregnancy-related experience. Paul’s wife Rae, 37, put him forward for the award, following the support Paul showed Rae and their son Thomas during the first few weeks of Thomas’ life last year, when both Rae and Thomas battled severe health problems straight after his birth.

Ex Hollyoaks actress Terri Dwyer presented the Tommy’s and Asda Triumph award to Colin Close, from Bangor in Northern Ireland.

Colin’s sister, Karen Simmonite, also from Bangor, nominated her brother for the Triumph Award, as the award celebrates someone who as a baby battled against the consequences of premature birth or another pregnancy problem, yet went on to succeed in life. Colin was suffering from health problems even before he was born, five weeks early, yet he overcame the odds and went on to compete in the Commonwealth Games, twice.

Also, well done to Holly King from Hampshire who is the lucky winner of the Let's Get Baby Friendly awards Keycamp holiday prize! Congratulations and enjoy your family getaway Holly!

The Awards also recognise the companies who are doing their bit to provide the most baby friendly services and products for families.  127,500 votes were cast in the nomination period, which ran throughout January and February 2010.
