The UK opens first maternity clinic for victims of sexual assault and rape

The UK's first maternity clinic for women who have been victims of sexual assault and rape has opened in London.

We're so pleased to report that the first maternity clinic in the UK for women who have been victims of sexual assault and rape has opened. The London-based clinic provides extra antenatal support to women with a team of specially trained midwives, psychologists and paediatricians. If the scheme is successful then it could be introduced in hospitals across the UK.

We at Tommy’s are pleased to see this significant step towards providing antenatal care that meets the needs of all women. Childbirth can be a particularly traumatic for women who have experienced sexual violence, which is why it is important that they receive specialist care.

Our midwife Kate explains:

“Pregnancy and giving birth is very personal and intimate experience for anyone, however for a woman who has experienced sexual violence this can be a prime time for triggering flashbacks, reliving the trauma and opens up a possibility of being in an environment which is potentially unpredictable and increases feelings of vulnerability.  1 in 5 women experience some form of sexual violence and it this shocking statistic that makes a facility for victims of sexual assault and rape so important. It is great to see that a facility that empowers these women and allows them to have more control over their birth experience now exists in the UK."

Women who have experienced rape or sexual assault our more likely to suffer anxiety about giving birth. Read more about the fear of giving birth or 'Tokophobia' here.
