As well as today being World Maternal Mental Health Day, this week (1st-7th May) is also Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week.
With 2 in 10 women experiencing mental health issues during pregnancy and in the first year following the birth, we know how important it is to raise awareness of how and where mums can get support for their mental health.
Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week has been organised by the Perinatal Mental Health Partnership and aims to encourage all mums and mums-to-be who are struggling to speak out and get support.
As Tommy's midwives, we know that emotional changes during pregnancy can really affect how you feel day-to-day. You may find that your mood swings from excited to worried or happy to sad and back again, all within the space of a few minutes! This is particularly normal during the first three months when pregnancy hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone are rising. But if you find that you have some feelings that don’t go away, this can be a sign of something more serious.
Seeking support and talking to someone, whether that is your GP or midwife, takes courage. But it is often the first step to feeling better.

So with Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week well underway, here’s how you can get involved, either for your own support or to help raise awareness:
- Visit the Perinatal Mental Health Partnership Facebook page to find out what’s happening near you. There are both online and in-person events happening throughout the week all over the country.
- Each day of the week is themed. You can find out about each day on the Maternal Mental Health Alliance website.
- Search #maternalMHmatters on Twitter and Facebook to see what supporters of Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week are posting.
- If you’ve got questions about mental health in pregnancy, join the nightly #PNDhour on Twitter from 8-9pm where Rosey from @PNDandMe will be hosting a live chat.
- Add a Twibbon to your profile picture to show your support for others.
If you’re concerned about your mental health, it’s important to get help and support sooner rather than later. As well as talking to your midwife or your GP, there are many organisations that can offer information and support such as PANDAS, Mind and APNI (Association for Postnatal Illness).
And if nothing else, remember that you are absolutely not alone.
