Tommy’s news, 03/02/2017
Charlotte and Attila Szakacs were able to spend 16 precious days with their baby girl, Evelyn, after she died at 4 weeks old on January the 10th.
Thanks to a cuddle cot in Martin House Hospice, Yorkshire, Charlotte and Attila were able to spend time with their little girl, even taking her out for cuddles and walks.
Tommy’s midwives Louise and Vicky from our stillbirth research centre in Manchester say;
‘The length of time bereaved families spend with their babies is very individual and should be supported. The use of cuddle cots are enabling families to stay with their babies, to have quality time and to create everlasting memories.’
Charlotte said that she understands that this may not be the right way to grieve for everybody. But for herself and Attila, it was important for them to be able to enjoy that family time and have proper cuddles with their little girl.
Evelyn was born at 5lb 5oz with a chromosome abnormality which left her with an underdeveloped brain and narrow aorta and airways.
Charlotte and Attila were initially unable to hold Evelyn for three days after her birth.
Once the decision to with draw care had been made, they were able to hold and cuddle her properly for the first time for an hour before the ventilator was turned off.
‘She passed away just a couple of minutes after they took out her breathing tube. She was so weak she didn’t take a single breath. I was holding her in my arms as she went and her dad had his arms around his both.’
We applaud this hospice for the care they gave Charlotte and Attila, and the fact that their ‘emphasis is always on the family’s wishes’.
