What does my baby look like?
Your baby’s heart started beating at 24 days. There’s a bulge where their heart is going to develop. Even at this very early stage, the heartbeat can sometimes be found on a vaginal ultrasound scan.
There’s also a bump where the brain and head are going to grow. Tiny dimples on this bump soon turn into ears and you can see a thick area where the eyes are going to form.

One of the hardest things to cope with in the first trimester is morning sickness. Don’t be fooled by the name, the nausea can hit you at any time of the day. Some women get it and some don’t, some get it in one pregnancy and not the next or vice versa. Researchers have not been able to find the cause of it.
Even if you feel terrible, you don’t need to worry about the baby unless you can’t keep anything at all down. Your baby will get everything he needs from you.

Morning sickness remedies
These are some things that women have said have helped them, though there is little research to prove that they work. There is no tried and tested morning sickness remedy other than time.
- Sparkling water
- Sucking ice cubes
- Small frequent meals
- Travel wristbands
- Foods and drinks that contain ginger (like ginger biscuits, chamomile and ginger tea, ginger ale and crystallised ginger).
If you find you can't keep anything down, speak to a doctor or midwife.
Some women suffer with horrible headaches in pregnancy, which can sometimes be caused by hormones or dehydration. Find out more about how much water you should drink in pregnancy.
The following tips might help:
- Try to rest when you can
- Find ways to relax, like pregnancy yoga. Our 10 tips to help you relax in pregnancy is a good place to start.
- If you need painkillers, make sure you take the recommended dose.
- Paracetamol is usually safe to take in pregnancy - but not all pain relief is so if you're thinking about a different pain killer make sure to check with your pharmacist.
- Have a chat with your midwife or GP about pain relief.
If you have a severe headache that will not go away, it’s important you’re checked out by your GP or midwife.
Tired and emotional?
Many women find that they get extremely tired during the first three months. Your body is working very hard so it's not surprising.
It can be difficult to cope with the tiredness, as you may not want to share the news of your pregnancy yet.

Just remember that this stage won't last forever, and the deep tiredness you're feeling usually passes when you reach the second trimester. If you can, get more sleep by going to bed earlier.
You may also feel emotional and tearful over little things, and you may find that your mood is suddenly going up and down because of the pregnancy hormones in your body. This is normal, but if you find that you are feeling sad more than you feel happy and the feeling does not go away speak to a midwife or doctor about it. Smoking and pregnancy
If you’ve just found out you’re pregnant and have been smoking, try not to worry. If you stop smoking now it will make a big difference to your and your baby’s health. We understand it’s a challenge to quit, but there’s lots of help and support out there for you.
The risks from secondhand smoke are also high. You might be surprised to learn that 80% of secondhand smoke is invisible and doesn’t smell. This means that if a smoker in your household quits, the benefits to you and your baby are huge, similar to when you stop yourself.
If you’re worried about the amount of secondhand smoke you may be taking in, you can ask your midwife for a Carbon Monoxide (CO) test.

I just hv a feeling of pregnancy bcs i don't know if i am or not
I had sexual intercourse on the 29th of October n saw my periods on the 11 november which was not my normal period day and i decided to take a test on the 27 November, the test came out negative, but m just left with that imaginations of me being pregnant, if i am that means m 6weeks now

Hi there... using 11th Nov as your last menstrual period date, you would only be 3 weeks and 4 days pregnant- so it may have been too early for you to have done a test before. To be certain, you could do another test now. However, if you have not had intercourse at all since the 29th Oct and have seen a period since then on the 11th Nov, then it is not at all likely that you are pregnant. Hi Amy. Congratulations on your pregnancy.
Peppermint water, which you can buy from any pharmacy/chemist can help with wind- esp if you drink it mixed in with hot water.
Having back pain could be a sign of a urine infection, so it is really important that you go to your GP asap to get your urine dip sticked and sent off and for antibiotics to be started if you do have a urine infection. Uti's in pregnancy can cause all sorts of pain and problems, so it is vital that you go asap to be seen and get treated.

I woke up early this morning with agonising pain in my lower left side and abdomen, I went to the bathroom to find I had started spotting, which has now turned into heavy bleeding.
Is this the start of the end of my pregnancy?

Hi there. It is vitally important that if you have severe pain, focused mostly on one side on your abdomen, that you go to seek urgent medical review in A&E now. Having pain on one side, in early pregnancy, can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, where the fetus grows in the Fallopian tube. This is incredibly dangerous to the pregnant woman as it risks rupture and internal bleeding. If you seek review, and the scan reveals that the pregnancy is not ectopic, then there could be many other less ominous causes of this spotting. But it is so important that you rule this one out first! Please get checked out ASAP!

Please try not to worry. This would not affect the growth of the baby. It would be a good idea to look at your diet to see if there is anything that is giving you the symptoms of abdominal pain. Sometimes eating smaller portions more regularly can help. Best wishes

Is it normal to fill acheness and cramps on lower sides and also have been feeling like sickly but not being sick which comes and goes through the day and night also keep waking up at night as change positions to sleep as can’t get that comfortable but find going to the bathroom helps I also feels so tired even wen I slept gud iv got craving for sweet things like short bread cakes and strawberry’s with cream.

Feeling some aches and nausea is very common in pregnancy, you do not say how many weeks pregnant you are, however symptoms can come and go during the whole of the pregnancy. Do speak with your midwife about your on going tiredness, again this can be very normal part of pregnancy however it is important to make sure that your iron levels are not too low. I understand you are craving sweet foods however these will make you feel even more tired, so try to snack little and often to keep your blood sugars level and stick to healthy options where possible. I have always had problems with my bowels, and Severe IBS symptoms. I am 6 weeks pregnant and I am getting terrible cramps just before and after opening my bowels. It feels like a deep ache and takes 15 -20 minutes to pass.
I am still waiting for my midwife appointment and I am so worried about this. Please can you help? Thank you x

Hi, sorry to hear that you are suffering so much.
As a first step we would advise to make sure that your diet is high in fibre with plenty of fruits and vegetables, to drink plenty of water and do regular exercise so to avoid constipation and to make opening your bowels as comfortable as possible.
Please be reassured that from what you have described, it is very unlikely to be posing a risk to your pregnancy however if this continues and you are concerned then do go and see your GP to be reviewed.

I would advise you to book in to your local Maternity unit as soon as possible so that you can have your dating scan and start your pregnancy care. In the UK this would involve an initial booking appointment with a midwife and then regular appointments throughout the pregnancy; I expect there is a similar system in Kenya.
I have attached a link to information that you may find helpful to have a safe pregnancy; always seek advise as soon as possible if you have any worrying symptoms or concerns at any time.

thanks for posting. Have you done a pregnancy test? If it is positive it may be that this is not a proper period but a breakthrough bleed or implantation bleeding at a similar time to when your period was due. The bleeding is usually lighter with a brownish tint and resolves within hours to a few days, unlike a period that is a redder blood and continues to become heavier.

Hi I am checking for my pregnancy since I missed my period.. all time it's showing positive. My only worry is I am getting cramps on my legs often like getting periods. I am having my ob appointment in 24 days. What can I do to get rid of this cramps. ?? Is this a sign of miscarrage. ? I don't have anything like this in my previous pregnancy

thanks for your post. Are you suffering from really bad leg cramps in early pregnancy? Sounds horrible. Leg cramps are quite common in early pregnancy and we think it is to do with congestion in the pelvic area that puts pressure on nerves and blood vessels in your legs.
You can try to do some stretches regularly flexing your feet, you could try some leg massage or go for a professional massage with someone who treats pregnant women regularly.
It may also be due to a deficiency in certain minerals like calcium, potassium and phosphorus so eating a healthy balanced diet with this in mind might help or you could look at taking supplements but check first with your pharmacist or doctor.
Be sure to be seen if you have localised pain, redness or swelling in one leg as this can be a sign of a DVT that is more likely in pregnancy.
I hope the cramps become less of a problem in your pregnancy.

You are showing some common signs of pregnancy. Sometimes women can do a pregnancy test too early so if you think you may be pregnant then wait a day or so and if you have missed your period then do another test, if it is still negative and you have no period then you can visit your GP who can perform a blood test that checks for the pregnancy hormone HCG in the blood, it is a sensitive test so this will show if you are pregnant or not. Hi, if you have done several pregnancy tests and had a blood test confirming that you are not pregnant then you can be rest assured that you are not pregnant. The blood test is the most sensitive and can pick up a pregnancy earlier than a home urine test. Hi I'm 6 weeks pregnant today and I've known since 4 weeks so quite early, I have pcos and conceived using clomid. I don't feel pregnant yet I'm not sick, boobs are a bit tender but that's my only symptom I have a scan a 7 weeks as we conceived using treatment, but I'm terrified they will scan and nothing will be there I've take 5 positive tests but still have such anxiety about it

It is very normal to feel anxious at this time. As you have been taking clomid you may not of thought that you would get pregnant so soon but you have and that such great news. There is nothing to suggest that there will be any problems at your scan, you are still having positive pregnancy tests. It is very normal not to 'feel' pregnant in the early days, sometimes it can take more time for symptoms to appear or they may not come at all, pregnancy symptoms are very different for every woman but it doesn't mean that there is a problem.
Be kind to yourself and try and be relaxed as much as you can, that is easier said then done. Maybe try some mindfulness to help you relax and talk to your partner, family or friends about how you are feeling, being able to talk about your feelings with someone will hopefully lift some of the anxiety and will give you reassurance. Hi, Thank you for your comment. It is very normal to feel tired during the early stages of pregnancy. If you are feeling tired during the day then take regular breaks and if you are at home, listen to your body and get some sleep. Loss of appetite is also common in early pregnancy. This can be due to all the hormones in your body which may also cause nausea and vomiting. Try and eat little and often, this could be crackers or a piece of fruit, something light to begin with. Try to avoid strong smelling foods as this may make you feel nauseous. It may be that you prefer to eat cold foods rather then hot foods or visa versa but just eat what works best for you. What is important is that you drink plenty of fluids so that you remain well hydrated and continue to take your pregnancy vitamins. These feelings should start to pass once you get into the 2nd trimester. If it doesn't get any better then we would advice speaking to your GP or midwife to see if you need any dietary advice or further treatment. Hope that this helps. Tommy's Midwives x

I am having a lot of pregnancy symptoms but I did a test 2 days before my due day it's negative and I was 5 days last on my period on the 6 day I start bleeding I went to the doctor but she told me just take a test again which I did and it's negative and she tell me take in a week time with will be on the 18 of april . I bleed for 1 day and spot for the other two days can you tell me if am pregnant .

I am 6 weeks pregnant, and I am very emotional this is my first child I am 18 and doing this on my own so it's all new to me i only found out a few days ago but I'm extremely thirsty all the time, and no food is appealing to me I've lost my appetite completely, also I keep being sick but ofcourse i haven't eaten much although I do try to eat something for the baby's sake. Feeling thirsty can be a common symptom in pregnancy and usually nothing to worry about, especially so early on. Try to drink plenty of water to keep yourself well hydrated, especially if you are not feeling able to eat much. Eating little and often will help with the feeling of nausea, even if you don't feel like eating much, a plain biscuit or cracker might help to make you feel a little better. Hi, I'm 6 weeks pregnant, last year I lost a baby at 11 weeks. Although this pregnancy is stronger my sickness nausea keeps coming and going- is this normal? I'm just just scared of losing another baby and I seem to keep focusing on things and want to put my mind at ease. Thank you
