What does my baby look like?
Your tiny baby is 9mm, about the size of a little fingernail now.
The outer layer of the cushiony amniotic sac develops into the placenta. Its cells grow deep into the wall of your womb, creating a rich blood supply.
Your placenta will give your baby nutrients (food) and oxygen through their umbilical cord.
It has three vessels: One thick vessel carrying oxygenated blood and nutrients to the baby (they won’t breathe through their lungs until they're born - which is why waterbirths are safe), and two thinner vessels that carry blood containing waste-products back into your circulatory system.
The placenta is a remarkable lifeline that also keeps bacteria and viruses away from your baby.

Choosing the best nutrition for you and your baby
You might find it hard to believe you are truly pregnant as you are unlikely to have seen a midwife yet, but it’s time to start looking after yourself and your baby. This week we’re looking at food and nutrition in pregnancy.
Your body is working hard to grow a baby but it’s also very efficient, which means there’s no need to ‘eat for two’. You won’t need any extra calories until your final trimester (and at that point you will only need an extra 200 calories a day – about half a sandwich). If you have morning sickness eating small meals often to keep your blood sugar levels steady.
Find out what 200 calories looks like.
Not doubling your calories will also help you manage your weight in pregnancy. Find out more about how much weight you may gain here.
Eating a healthy, balanced diet in pregnancy will give you more energy and ensure your baby gets all the nutrients it needs.
“I used to eat a lot of junk food, but when I was pregnant I took healthy snacks to work instead - fruit, yoghurts and almonds - and I drank a lot of water.”

What foods are off limits?
Trying to remember all the dos and don’ts in pregnancy – like which foods to avoid - feels complicated, but don't worry, and don't be too concerned if you have eaten something that is on the list, the risk is small. Talk to your midwife if you can't stop worrying about it.
Read our tips to avoid food poisoning.
Vegetarian or vegan?
It’s fine to follow a vegetarian or vegan diet in pregnancy but make sure it is varied and includes all the food groups. Learn more about planning your vegetarian or vegan diet to ensure your baby gets enough vitamin B12, riboflavin, iron, zinc, calcium and iodine.
Cutting down on caffeine
Too much caffeine is harmful to a growing baby so it’s important to limit your intake to 200mg a day now that you’re pregnant. You might be surprised to learn that caffeine is not just found in coffee, but also in tea, chocolate and energy drinks! Decaffeinated tea and coffee, fruit juice or water are all good choices if you are used to drinking a lot of caffeinated drinks. Use our caffeine calculator to see how much caffine is in your diet.

If you have still not seen your period, and your pregnancy tests are negative, then it is a good idea for you to visit your GP. They will review you and refer you to a gynae clinic if they are concerned about your symptoms. Take care, Tommy's Midwife

I can't stop thinking and browsing for the same topics everyday. I have 3 children , before the last born I had an ectopic pregnancy so I considered my last born lucky. I have recently tested positive for pregnancy with two test and booked an immediate scan which showed nothing at all except for the thick lining and cysts . The tech booked another scan in 3 weeks and said it might be too early and asked if I had irregular cycles which I had . I am worried I am getting out of my mind. My partner said I must be positive but I am scared of another ectopic. I have only felft hot a lot and used to urinate a lot and constant hunger as well as my breast was a bit sensitive nipples felt like as if a razor was over it but it's all gone. Nipples and breast don't feel anything. No vomit and nausea but with all my pregnancies I had nausea and vomiting. I just don't feel pregnant although I feel bloated and gassy. I don't have pain nor spotting. I have had wet panties like watery discharge but that is all. It seems like it stopped as well. I am only due for second scan on the 22 March I am worried sick. Any advice please?

It sounds like it would be a good idea to speak with your GP for a review to check for any underlying medical cause of your symptoms.

Hi Michelle, how did your 2nd scan go? I'm in the same boat as you and cannot focus on anything else. I had my first ultrasound today, and the gestational sac and yolk sac were present but not the embryo. They said I am anywhere from 5.5 weeks to 6 weeks but have to wait 2 more weeks for another ultrasound. What did you do pass the time?

Hi, am 26yrs and this is my second child to have.
I had my period twice in Dec 2018, 6th was about 3 day and 28th was also 3days .which is making me confused about this pregnancy.
I was feelings guilty of being pregnant especially abdominal pain and was also having some infection. On the 7th January 2019, I went for tests including hcg...the hch came negative unlike the infection it was reactive. I was put on medication for the reaction and some pain tabs. I took all my medication but the abdominal pain still didn't go away.
On the 24th January 2019, I had a home test and it was faintly positive. I repeated the test on the 27th again and I was more clearer. I went for an ultrasound on the 28th but nothing was found. Am confused pls help me understand off course am going for another scan in the next two weeks. Thanks

Hey this is my first pregnancy and I went to my OBGYN last week and she did her test for closing of the cervix and all. I did an ultrasound just minutes after but it was too small to be done on my tummy so the probe was inserted and a sac was seen but I was told there was a little bleeding but no alarm. I started bleeding the next day with some cramps and called my doctor and she said it was normal becaue it could be implantation bleeding but then it continued for 3 days with period-like cramps. The bleeding and cramps stopped but now I'm not sure if I'm still pregnant or I miscarried, doc says I have to wait 2 weeks before they can tell anything. Could the bleeding have been because of the insertion of the probe?
By Midwife @Tommys on 3 Jan 2019 - 11:57
You will have likely been seen now and I really hope your pregnancy is continuing and all is well. The insertion of the probe would very unlikely be the cause of the bleeding you experienced, it sounds more like an implantation bleed. I hope things have settled down now and you are being well supported.

Am five weeks and four days pregnant. I went for an abdominal ultrascan and only the gestational sac was detected but no fetal found non cardiac activity seen. Am total confused
By Midwife @Tommys on 7 Dec 2018 - 16:45
I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing an anxious time in this pregnancy. It is difficult to know at the moment what is happening, and I would think that they have booked you in for another scan. At 5+4 gestation, it maybe a little early to be able to see a heartbeat so they need to wait until your baby is a bit bigger before they can see a heartbeat. If you have any pain or bleeding then do see your GP.

Hi, am 5weeks gone and my breast suddenly stopped feeling tender, am not on any prenatal vitamins yet and I dnt know if that is the reason why. Should I start taking the vitamins now to replenish my body? Please
By Midwife @Tommys on 26 Nov 2018 - 11:30
No, Multi vitamins are not routinely recommended in pregnancy, but we do advise to take folic acid and vitamin D.
Otherwise just try to maintain a healthy balanced diet and avoid smoking and alcohol. Take care

Hi, I'm 5 weeks pregnant and my first initial midwife app wouldn't land until Jan now due to dates midwife is at my surgery, however I had a miscarriage in May and I feel very anxious with this pregnancy. Do you think I could be seen a little earlier for my first midwife app?
By Midwife @Tommys on 26 Nov 2018 - 11:27
Hi Holly, Keep following our weekly advice for early pregnancy including maintaining a good diet, stopping smoking and drinking and taking folic acid. There is no harm in asking whether your appointment can be brought forward but if this isn't possible, your blood tests and scan should be arranged by 12 weeks and your midwife will arrange anything else as soon as possible.

I am 41 and i am 10 days late and i am usually very regular. I took a digital cb test yesterday and it said pregnant. I i took the other regular cb test this morning that was in the package and it was negative. I am having pregnancy symptoms. Which test should i go by
By Midwife @Tommys on 29 Oct 2018 - 11:59
I would recommend that you do another test (as it was now 3 days ago that you sent this message) and this should give you a clearer result. You will then need to go to your GP to confirm the pregnancy and get you referred for a midwife booking appointment and your ultrasound scan booked in for 12 weeks. Good luck

Hello, I've recently found out that I am pregnant...5 weeks now. But I'm worried with the severe stress that I'm having this could be affecting my baby. Can this kind of stress cause some sort of deformity on the baby. I'm really worried
By Midwife @Tommys on 27 Sep 2018 - 15:54
Hi Thuli, Thank you for your comment.
It is always advisable to keep stress levels in pregnancy to a minimum but this is not always possible. Please be reassured that stress will not deforming your baby. What is important if that you find ways of managing your stress. Pregnancy and all the fluctuating hormones can have an effect on your mood so it is important to recognise if you are not coping. Speak to your family, friends or GP or midwife about how you are feeling, support is there if you need it, you just have to ask. If you would like more advice then please contact the Tommy's Midwives on [email protected] or call on 0800 0147 800 Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. Hope this helps, Take Care, Tommy's Midwives x

My period avg 31-34 days. My last cycle was 7/12 its now 8/20 and no af , no symptoms besides fatigue . When should i test, is my period even still considered late?
By Midwife @Tommys on 22 Aug 2018 - 11:08
Waiting at least a week after a missed period may give you the most accurate result. Results may also be more accurate if you do the test first thing in the morning, when your urine is more concentrated. Urine home pregnancy tests are about 99% accurate.
All the best

Hello. I always get my menses every month but they always come 8 days late. I don't know if this is counted as irregular. I got my positive preg tests last week. Last period date was 26th june. How many weeks do you suppose I am? I was on clomjd 50mg. Had been trying for 6 month. I got it confirmed and def pregnant. I get mild cramps that come and go. Is that normal? Sore boobs since last week. Haven't been for ultrasound yet.. Last week was super hungry all the time.. This week lil loss of appetite. Is all that normal?? When can I go for ultrasound?
By Midwife @Tommys on 6 Aug 2018 - 11:15
By your dates this would give a due date of 5 weeks 2 days but if you have a longer cycle you may be a week less than this. Most hospitals scan at 12 weeks but you should see your doctor to arrange your antenatal care as soon as possible. Also go to our information about advice once you are pregnant. We have good information about folic acid supplements and what to eat in pregnancy etc. Best wishes

I've been laying on my right side and I'm 5 weeks pregnant. I learned just last night that laying on your right side is bad and the left side is best. Do you think I've cause harm to the baby?
By Midwife @Tommys on 3 Aug 2018 - 15:45
Please do not worry at all, the advice about going to sleep on your side applies to when you are in your third trimester. Even then it can be either side, doesn't matter if it is left or right. Right now it does not matter how you sleep, which ever way is comfortable.

I’m 5 weeks pregnant, I initially had very tender breasts but I’ve woken up this morning and it appears to have stopped. Should I be worried?
By Midwife @Tommys on 6 Jun 2018 - 15:05
Pregnancy symptoms can come and go as hormones fluctuate on a daily basis. So please don't worry. If you experience any pain or bleeding, then you will need to seek medical review, but for now, pregnancy symptoms coming and going is quite normal and not necessarily a sign of a failing pregnancy. Feel free to give us a call on the pregnancyline if there is anything else you wish to talk about.

By Midwife @Tommys on 16 Jul 2018 - 15:06
No not really. Some days will be better than others but fluctuating from one extreme to the other is less likely.

I’m 5 weeks pregnant and my 3 children have got slapped cheek I have been to doctors for blood tests to see if I’m immune results still haven’t came back, I’m really quite worried as I don’t want to miscarry or the baby to have any problems with anemia or heart failure I think I’ve looked so much into this I’m scared now has anyone else been in this situation and if so what happened with you.
By Midwife @Tommys on 29 May 2018 - 10:45
i am sorry to hear that you are feeling very anxious at the moment in waiting for your blood results. But well done for getting the blood test done so quickly when you had your children diagnosed with slapped cheek. I know it is a worrying time, but you will be given lots of extra scans if the test comes back as positive and you will have consultant led care. I have everything crossed for you that the test comes back negative. NHS have some good information on the link below.. https://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1112.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=137

For the first time my period is 13days late, during the lateness till now I have headaches, increased body temperature, discharge whiteand sticky, fuller breast, mild cramping off and on, I have had a home pregnancy test done yesterday but came out negative. What should I do? Should I wait it out another week and get test done again?.
By Midwife @Tommys on 3 May 2018 - 13:47
Hi Tosleek, Thank you for your comment.
Have you been actively trying for a baby? If you have then there could be a chance that you are pregnant, especially as it is not normal for your period too be this late. If you are happy waiting a week then do another test then this is an option for you, if you are still unsure then you can always go and see your GP who can do a blood test for the pregnancy hormone as this is more sensitive then a urine test. If you are planning a pregnancy then make sure you are taking your pregnancy vitamins and maintaining a health diet. Hope this helps, Take Care, Tommy's Midwives x

I keep getting pains in my abdomen and I'm scared I'm at risk of a miscarriage I'm only about 5-6 weeks and I don't know what to do I'm scared, I feel it when I stretch and when I lay on my stomach or sides
By Midwife @Tommys on 18 Apr 2018 - 16:27
Any abdominal pain, at any gestation, needs to be investigated. You can go to your GP as an urgent appointment and get them to refer you to your local early pregnancy assessment. If the pain is very severe and you are out of GP hours, then you need to go to A&E for urgent review (to rule out ectopic pregnancy)
If you need to discuss this further, feel free to call us on 0800 0147800

I had my first beta blood test yesterday at 12 days past my 5day embryo transfer with IVF. My HCG level measured at 115. This seems very low to me compared to what I've read. What are your thoughts? Is this ok? Am I at a higher risk for miscarrying? Other women on the same time frame have HCG's around 300-600.
By Midwife @Tommys on 15 Mar 2018 - 16:05
Hi, HCG levels rise differently for all women. As a general rule they double about every 48-72 hours until about 8-10 weeks of pregnancy. However to reiterate this can differ significantly for each woman. HCG in itself it not a predictor of miscarriage. I understand this is an anxious time for you however please try to take it day by day. If we can support you at all then please do be in touch. Best wishes, Tommy's midwives.

Hello.. I am late for my periods this month by 5 days. I am having cramps on and off daily. And also vomitted . Fever and headache are constantly there since the missed date of period. Earlier I saw some brownish discharge on the day of period and later it vanished. And after 3 days I am getting vaginal discharge clear and watery could that be a sign of getting menstruation.. My food aversions and cravings are different now. So much dizziness and tiredness inside me. I have not tested yet. Scared of negative results.
By Midwife @Tommys on 12 Mar 2018 - 15:21
Hi Nabiha, Fever and headache are not usually signs of pregnancy and there could be other reasons for your fever. I would suggest that you do a pregnancy test which will help you to understand the causes of your symptoms.

I went for an internal ultra sound yday after pains and brown spotting. Was told by the GP that i was 7 weeks but the ultra sound confirmed i was actually 5 weeks and 1 day - they detected a tiny heart beat!
Since my ultra sound, i have experienced more brown blood than usual and after speaking with the hospital today, they did say some women to experience some bleeding after an internal scan but to contact back if it gets heavier.
There is no pain which is good - but i am just worried that this isnt normal?
It explains why i had brown spotting as it was around the time of my period that i found out which i have been told that brown blood is old blood?
Thanks in advance.
By Midwife @Tommys on 22 Feb 2018 - 11:26
Hi, Thank you for your comment.
It can be normal to have spotting in early pregnancy and brown loss does indicate old blood. It sounds reassuring that your are in no pain and that your loss has not got any heavier. This can be normal in early pregnancy and you have had a scan that again was reassuring. It is understandable that you are worried at this stage, but spotting can occur in early pregnancy, especially around the time when you expected a period. Try and rest and take it easy over the next few days, just keep an eye on things and if the loss does increase or you have any abdominal pain then please contact the hospital to be seen. Take care, hope this helps, Tommy's Midwives x
