28 weeks pregnant - all you need to know

What does my baby look like in week 28? 

Your baby weighs about 1kg now and is roughly the size of an aubergine. They’re starting to take up more space in your womb and, as the weeks go by, you may start to feel a bit more uncomfortable and tired.

Your baby will be having periods of sleep and periods of activity, which you’ll probably be aware of because of their movements. You may have noticed that these movements are settling into a regular pattern.

Take note of the pattern as it will help you notice if your baby’s movements slow down. If this happens, it should be checked immediately.

Funny feeling in your legs?

Do you get an uncontrollable urge to move your legs? Or perhaps a crawling, tingling sensation? This could be restless leg syndrome. It’s quite common in pregnancy - and usually strikes when you’re resting or in bed.

It will go away once your baby is born. For now, take a look at the NHS tips for easing symptoms.

Feeling uncomfortable

Use pillows as best you can to get comfortable. Try one supporting your bump, another for your back and then one between your legs.

Pillows will also help you go to sleep on your side, which is the safest sleeping position for baby in late pregnancy. Another trick for helping with this that women have told us about is tying their hair in a low bun, which makes back sleeping too uncomfortable for any length of time.

What to do in week 28

Next midwife appointment

You may have a routine antenatal appointment at 28 weeks. You’ll be offered a blood test to screen for anaemia and any antibodies in the blood. You may be prescribed iron tablets if your iron levels are low.

Swim time

As well as being good for your circulation, swimming in pregnancy improves your muscle tone and increases your endurance (great for preparing for labour). It may also give you more energy and help you sleep better.

As your bump grows, the feeling of weightlessness in the water can be lovely and relaxing.

Birth plan

If you haven’t written your birth plan yet, you may want to start thinking about doing it.

Think about the different kinds of pain relief and which, if any, you may like to consider when you’re in labour.

Did you know that depending on where you live and your health, you could decide to give birth in hospital, in a midwife-led birth centre or at home? Read more about where you can give birth.

      Hi good day! Im 28weeks pregnant with twin.My tommy is so big and the babies were kept moving. I also noticed of my discharges,sometimes its sticky sometimes its not.I sometimes felt discomfort the way I slept or maybe because of contractions.What should I do???

      Am 28weeks pregnant, but am having very low sex urge and am very dry during this exercise, is it normal or I should be worried.

      I am 28 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing blackouts and feeling faint, how can I stop this from happening. Usually happens when I travel.

      Hi Shannon
      You need to go to your maternity unit triage/day assessment unit/labour for urgent review. You might be Anaemic, or you could be suffering with low blood pressure. Either way, you need to be urgently checked over. Take good care of yourself. Tommy's Midwife

      I had a spine fusion in 2015 now I am pregnant and I had 2 c-sections before must I be worried or will I get a chance to deliver normal

      Hi am having some severe head aches have gone for medical tests did all the necessary tests like eclempsia but everything is just fine but my question is can anything be wrong with me ?

      I had a growth scan today at 28 weeks as im on blood pressure tablets and they said my baby stomach is bigger than it should be as it's off the scale i also just had a glucose test last week which was normal. Which i have to repeat again im also boarder line for preeclampsia is there something wrong with my baby as nobody is telling me any thing.

      Hi Linzi, Thank you for your comment.

      There is nothing to suggest that there is anything wrong with your baby at this time, they just want to keep an eye on you and your health which in turn, looks after your baby's wellbeing. Babies that tend to have a larger tummy measurement can be an indicator that the mum may be developing gestational diabetes, which causes increase blood sugars in pregnancy and this may need treating with medication. You have had a glucose test and this is normal, they just want to repeat this to check that it is remaining normal. As you have raised blood pressure as well, then you have some risk factors, so the Drs will want to see you more often to keep an eye on your pregnancy. If everything remains stable then the Drs will not need to do anything but having regular check ups means that if you need to be treated in any way then this will be picked up. If you are concerned about any aspect of your care then we would suggest that you contact you local maternity unit and discuss your plan of care with the maternity team that are looking after you, they wont mind answered any questions that you have as long as you feel reassured.       If you think you have a urine infection then it is important to see your midwife or GP for a review, and if they diagnose one then they will prescribe you antibiotics to get rid of the infection. It is also important to keep hydrated by drinking water regularly.
