Lilia is Listening

Sara Brooke Curtis lost her baby daughter, Lilia, only 3 days after she was born. With 1 in 4 pregnancies in the UK ending in loss during pregnancy or birth, sadly, Sara is not alone.

Story by Sara Brooke Curtis

In this beautiful tribute Sara opens up about her experience of baby loss. It is full of tenderness, vulnerability, and love:

Your brother Eligh Moon has a little move he makes for every emotion he has.

I picture you listening in on us with a stethoscope, your ears tuning in to everything we do.

I imagine our home beating like a heart, transmitting a pulse and frequency, just for you.

When I sing to Eligh, I am also singing to you. I don’t want to leave you out, Lilia, I don’t want to leave you out.

When you were born, you didn’t make a sound. The only sound I remember you making was 3 days later when you were dying in my arms. Sips of air, teeny growls, followed by a terrifying layer of silence.

Someone told me once that you probably left a note inside my womb for him. Some secret message to help him on his way to make it to earth safely.

I listen more deeply because I had you first.

I love him more deeply because I had you first.

Losing a baby is devastating. That’s why Tommy’s is working to break the silence around baby loss. By talking about it openly and honestly, not only can we help each other feel less alone, we can also pave the way for greater awareness and research to stop it happening.
