‘Five miscarriages. Five babies we’ll never meet. Five goodbyes before hello’

Karl McPherson is taking on an incredible fundraising challenge. Cycling to five ski centres, covering over 320 miles and climbing almost the vertical height of Everest to raise money for Tommy’s miscarriage research.

Tommy’s charity fundraising story, 09/06/2017

Recurrent miscarriage is a cruel and unfair reality for many couples across the UK.

About 1 in 100 women currently experience recurrent miscarriages, many of which remain unexplained.

Sadly, whilst miscarriage is by far the biggest cause of pregnancy loss in the UK, it is also the least understood.

Karl McPherson is taking on a gruelling physical challenge to fund Tommy’s research into miscarriage after he and his wife experienced this pain five times.

‘My wife and I are incredibly blessed with a tenacious, witty and loving son and have tried over and over again to give him a sibling. We currently stand at 5 miscarriages. 5 babies we will never meet, whose jokes we will never pretend to understand, nor watch take their first steps and more. 5 times of saying goodbye before we had even met.’

Karl is also an Obstetrician, working with women who experience pregnancy loss and complications on a daily basis.

It's hard to show quite how much I sympathise with their plight.’

On the 7th of July, Karl will be cycling unsupported for around 320 miles over several days.

Karl will be climbing nearly the vertical height of Everest – cycling to Nevis Range Mountain Resort, Glencoe Mountain Resort, Glenshee Ski Centre, Cairngorm Mountain Resort and the Lecht Ski Centre.

He has named this challenge 5for5, as he will be cycling to five ski centres in memory of the five babies he never got to meet.

Karl has already hit his target of £1,000 and is now aiming to raise as much as he possibly can to help save other parents the heartache that he and his wife have endured.

We think this challenge is absolutely phenomenal. We can’t wait to cheer Karl on in this year’s Prudential RideLondon-Surrey as well!
