Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo announces the loss of baby boy

After announcing they were expecting twins in October 2021, Manchester United footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner Georgina have shared the devastating news that one of their babies has not survived the birth.

After announcing they were expecting twins in October last year, Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner, Georgina Rodríguez, have shared the devastating news that one of their babies did not survive the birth.

In a statement on social media yesterday evening, the couple explained that their son had passed away and that only the birth of his twin sister was giving them “the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.”

At Tommy’s, we know that baby loss at any stage in pregnancy is a devastating experience, and our thoughts and condolences are with Cristiano, Georgina and their family at this heart-breaking time. To share their news with so many people takes real courage and helps to open conversations which mean other parents feels less alone.

Tommy’s Midwifery Manager, Amina Hatia, says:

“We're deeply sad to hear that Cristiano and Georgina have lost one of their twins, a baby boy. For those who have lost a baby themselves, yesterday's news might have been particularly difficult to hear and might bring back recent or older memories and feelings from their own experience. Remember that this is normal, and everyone copes with the loss of their baby in different ways.

"Also remember that there’s no right or wrong way to grieve, and no time period where grief should end. The only advice that will apply to everyone is to remember that you are not alone and to please reach out for help from organisations like Tommy's if you need it.”
