Types of funding

The primary objective of Tommy’s research programme is to understand how to prevent pregnancy complications from occurring.

We do this through funding research that focuses on the following areas:

• The causes and prevention or treatment of miscarriage, premature delivery and stillbirth
• Placental dysfunction and other causes of growth retardation
• Fetal distress in labour

Tommy’s has two main ways to fund research

1. Core funding for Research centres
2. Individual Research project grants

Tommy's has established two centres of excellence for Maternal and Fetal Health Research, led by Tommy’s Professors.  These centres both achieved ratings of 5* (the highest possible) in the most recent round of the Research Assessment Exercise.

Tommy’s wants to ensure that all funding spent on medical research at our centres is used productively.  For this reason both research centres undergo an external audit by experts in the field of maternal and fetal health every 2 years.

In addition to these Chairs of Maternal and Fetal Health, Tommy's has funded over 60 medical research studies based at hospitals and universities across the country. For more information on a selection of these projects, please look at the research projects page.

Every application for funding received by Tommy’s is reviewed by our external advisors to ensure that the charity only supports first class research which will have the biggest impact on our aims.
