Snack and Recipe information

Pregnancy is a good time to browse through your cookbooks and look for the most nutritious combinations of foods. However, you do not have to spend hours in the kitchen to create healthy delicious meals. Here are some ideas for quick snacks.

Snacks

  • Marmite on wholemeal toast with a glass of fresh orange juice
  • Bowl of fruit salad made with a mixture of fresh and dried fruit
  • Bagel filled with cream cheese, lettuce and tomatoes
  • Pieces of raw vegetables with a homemade dip of tsatziki
  • Bowl of bran flakes with chopped up banana, strawberry or kiwi fruit
  • A crisp apple and a chunk of cheddar cheese
  • Tub of yoghurt or fromage frais with a smoothie

Tzatziki

Peel and dice a cucumber and place in a sieve and liberally sprinkle with salt. After 30 minutes, rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Add this with a crushed clove of garlic, handful of chopped mint and plenty of freshly milled black pepper to about a pint of low fat natural yoghurt or Greek yoghurt for a creamier taste.

Smoothies

Smoothies are combinations of chopped up fruit blended together with a little fruit juice or milk. It is very easy to make up your own recipes. For example blend a banana, half a mango and a glass of apple juice together. Or blend a large slice of watermelon with a few strawberries and half a pear together. If the mixture is too thick, add some more juice. Homemade smoothies do need to be drunk immediately as they do not store well.
