In the UK, one in four women will lose a baby as a result of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. Tommy’s believes this level of heartache is unacceptable. Through investment in medical research we want to make things better.
Our new Edinburgh centre, opened by the Prime Minister's wife Sarah Brown in April 2008, has dramatically enhanced our potential to do this. Alongside established centres in London and Manchester we have more than 100 doctors and midwives working together to improve pregnancy outcome for mother and baby. The centres have fostered an ambitious spirit of collaboration meaning Tommy’s research network is now one of the biggest in Europe and a major force worldwide.

 | Key achievementsWe've identified markers that predict, very early in pregnancy, whether problems are likely to occur. We hope this will result in a predictive test that will drastically reduce the risk of losing a baby. We've also made vital breakthroughs in preventing premature birth by looking at the causes of contractions. Our achievements. | | Measuring successEach year an independent report is compiled to measure the success of our research centres. See the reports. |
